Embrace Your Femininity With Self-Care

International Day, which is celebrated on 8 March each year, is a time when the world comes together to recognise the achievements and contributions of women across the globe. While this is important, it is crucial to also acknowledge the importance of self-care among the fairer sex.

As women, we often find ourselves juggling multiple roles and responsibilities. From being loving mothers and daughters to dedicated professionals, partners, caregivers and community leaders, the list can be endless. It is no surprise, therefore, that self-care frequently falls by the wayside.

With the constant pull of family obligations, work deadlines and social commitments, it’s easy to forget about nurturing ourselves. We push through exhaustion, put others’ needs first, and keep our well-being at the bottom of our priority lists. But, it’s time to change that narrative. After all, we won’t be able to pour for others if our own cup is empty.

Diving into the Dimensions of Wellness
Neglecting our personal well-being can have a negative impact on our lives. This could include chronic stress, anxiety, depression and burnout which can subsequently lead to exhaustion and an inability to focus,  ultimately affecting our many roles in life.

Did you know that wellness is a holistic integration of physical, mental and spiritual well-being, encompassing eight interdependent dimensions? It is important to consider all these aspects for a comprehensive approach to self-care.

Physical Wellness: This refers to taking care of our bodies via good habits, such as exercise, nutrition and rest. Regular physical activity, eating balanced meals and getting enough sleep while abstaining from vices like drug and alcohol misuse are all crucial for staying healthy now and in the future.

Emotional Wellness: This involves understanding and managing our emotions. Practicing mindfulness, expressing feelings in healthy ways and seeking support when needed can help us maintain emotional balance as well as feeling positive and enthusiastic about life.

Social Wellness: Building and nurturing strong and healthy relationships with family, friends,  colleagues and the community is vital. Surrounding ourselves with positive, supportive people strengthens our sense of belonging.

Intellectual Wellness: It is important to maintain curiosity and expand our knowledge and skills. Engaging the mind through continuous learning helps us stay mentally sharp. Reading, taking up new hobbies and challenging the brain  are some ways that contribute to intellectual well-being.

Spiritual Wellness: This dimension connects to our sense of purpose, values and beliefs that give meaning to our lives. Whether through religion, meditation or connection with nature, nurturing our spirituality provides inner peace and fulfillment.

Occupational/Vocational Wellness: Finding satisfaction and fulfillment in employing our strengths, skills and talents is key. Creating a balance between career and personal life, setting healthy boundaries and feeling valued in our role contribute to this dimension.

Environmental Wellness: Being aware of how our social, natural and built environments affect us and vice versa is vital. We need to surround ourselves with a healthy, safe and supportive environment that helps us feel more at ease and be in harmony with the land around us.

Financial Wellness: This dimension is about managing our resources and making informed decisions to living within our means, as well as setting achievable goals while being prepared for emergencies and the future.

Achieving Wellness as a Woman
As women, it is essential to integrate these eight dimensions of wellness into our lives to promote balance and well-being. Here are some practical tips to help make this happen

  • Make Time: Set aside time each day or week to focus on YOU. Whether it is a quiet moment with a book, a bath or a walk outside, prioritise moments of solitude.
  • Set Boundaries: It is OK to say no. Protect your time and energy by setting boundaries that allow you to preserve your well-being without feeling guilty.
  • Practice Mindfulness: Incorporating mindfulness techniques, such as meditation or deep breathing, can help you stay present and reduce stress.
  • Get Active: Exercise doesn’t have to be intense. Even a short daily walk can have a huge impact on your physical and mental health.
  • Seek Support: Reach out to friends, family or professionals when you need emotional support. A strong network is key to maintaining your emotional wellness.
  • Nourish Your Body: Opt for healthy, nourishing foods that fuel your body and help you feel energised.
  • Prioritise Rest: Sleep is essential for both physical and mental recovery. Create a restful sleep environment and establish a calming nighttime routine.
