Enhanced External Counter Pulsation (EECP) is a non-invasive medical treatment primarily used for certain cardiovascular conditions, chronic health diseases(high blood pressure, diabetes, high cholesterol),or for healthy individuals as wellness purpose.
1. Purpose:
EECP is often employed to treat angina (chest pain) and heart failure.
It aims to improve blood flow to the heart muscle.
2. Procedure:
The patient lies on a treatment table with three pairs of cuffs wrapped around the lower limbs.
These cuffs inflate and deflate in sync with the patient’s cardiac cycle, enhancing blood flow during the diastolic phase (when the heart is at rest).
3. Mechanism:
During inflation, the cuffs create a pressure wave that increases blood flow to the coronary arteries.
This helps in the formation of collaterals, small blood vessels that can provide an alternative route for blood to reach the heart muscle.
During the deflation phase, blood returns to the lower extremities, reducing the heart’s workload and improving overall coronary perfusion.
4. Treatment Session:
A typical EECP session lasts about one hour.
The patient lies on a treatment table, and cuffs are wrapped around the calves, thighs, and buttocks.
The cuffs inflate and deflate based on the patient’s electrocardiogram (ECG) signal, synchronized with the heart’s natural rhythm.
Each session involves a specific sequence of inflations and deflations.
5. Benefits and key effects:
-Improved Blood Flow:
EECP enhances blood flow to the coronary arteries during the diastolic phase of the cardiac cycle, potentially increasing oxygenated blood supply to the heart muscle.
-Formation of Collaterals:
The pressure waves generated by EECP may stimulate the development of collateral blood vessels, providing alternative routes for blood to reach the heart.
-Symptomatic Relief for Angina:
EECP has been shown to provide relief from angina symptoms in some individuals, potentially allowing for increased exercise tolerance and reduced dependence on
medications.
-Enhanced Exercise Capacity:
Patients who undergo EECP may experience improvements in their ability to engage in physical activities due to better blood circulation and oxygen delivery to the muscles.
-Quality of Life:
Some individuals report an enhanced quality of life after undergoing EECP treatment, particularly if they were experiencing limitations in daily activities due to cardiovascular issues.
-Non-Invasive Nature:
EECP is a non-invasive procedure, meaning it does not require surgery or catheterization, which can be appealing for individuals who may not be candidates for more invasive interventions.
6. Indications:
Typically used in individuals with refractory angina or heart failure who may not be suitable candidates for invasive procedures like coronary artery bypass grafting or angioplasty.
For chronic diseases pts ( for exp:diabetes, hypertension, hyperlipidemia)
For healthy individuals for wellness purpose
